GUANTANAMERA
COMPILATION
Since early in the 20th century, Cuban popular music began to attain international recognition, especially in Europe and the United States. Rich in diverse rhythms, it has caused frenzy worldwide, even and quite unexpectedly in some of the world’s most remote areas. That’s why it is not surprising to find people everywhere with a Cuban music private record collection. For those who don’t own one yet, this compilation could be a good start.

Ideal for a home evening party, it includes some of Cuba’s top popular music artists from the last century, most of whom play son; one of the island’s best internationally known rhythms.

Celina González (Pimienta y Sal) and Inocente Iznaga (Caminito Zaza) bring in rural son, which comes with the sound of the Cuban tropical forest and imbued with the Spanish musical heritage. The itinerant singer carrying around his tres, a guitar-type instrument typical of Cuba, is represented here by Faustino Oramas; best known as El Guayabero. The son turned urban in the 1920’s, when it began to be played at Havana’s modest dance halls. Singer Celeste Mendoza and the Sierra Maestra group (Échale Salsita), band leader Ñico Saquito (Cuidadito Compay Gallo) and the Ignacio Piñeiro Septet are the urban son stars included in this anthology.

The Charanga Francesa, a type of orchestra, which was very popular at Havana’s dance halls since the early 19th century, played at that time danzas- French dances- , contradanzas -a relative of the European country dances- and danzones -a Cuban music form born out of the previous two. All throughout the 20th century, these orchestras continued playing danzones yet added other Cuban rhythms to their repertoire, such as son in the 1920’s and chachachá in the 50’s.  The tracks played on this CD by the Orquesta Melodías del 40 (Me voy pa’Morón), the Orquesta Sensación (El Guajiro de Cunagua) and the Orquesta Sublime (Caimitillo y Marañón) are the best examples of this type of orchestra and music. There is also the Orquesta Aragón playing Richard Egues’ legendary chachachá entitled El Bodeguero, known worldwide as recorded by Nat King Cole.

During the 20th century, Cuban popular music artists creatively assimilated influences from American music. In the 1940’s it was the so-called conjuntos and their spreading across Havana. However, the 50’s brought a true apotheosis with the jazz bands taking over every dance hall in the city. As an example of the conjuntos, the anthology includes the Conjunto Caney (Francisco Guayabal). Julio Cuevas, the Riverside Orchestra and especially, Beny Moré’s Big Band show, on the other hand, the zesty combination achieved by Cuban jazz bands at the time.

Special recommendation: save Joseíto Fernández’s epic title Guantanamera for when guests at your party go sip their one last cocktail drink. Almost like the universal hymn of everything Cuban and fun, the Guantanamera is ideal for your party’s best moment.
