Irakere represents a whole period in Cuban music that goes from the early 1970’s all the way through the 80’s. Renowned musicians such as Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and indeed its founder and director, Chucho Valdés developed their professional careers in this band. Irakere was then some sort of laboratory and popular music academy where musicians experimented and learned from each other as they developed a style without precedents in Cuban popular music. Although the group is best known for putting everyone up and dancing, its greatest contribution has been taking on and developing challenging musical ideas with total freedom. The proof is this compilation album: check the memorable Romance –featuring prestigious guitarist Leo Brower- or the seemingly old fashioned yet here revitalized Danzón en Valle de Picadura... Dancers seeking to enjoy the band’s steaming flavor must check Aguanile Boncó, Las Semillas, La Verdad, Rucu Rucu a Santa Clara… and indeed, one of the band’s first recordings, Bacalao con Pan, which even when bringing controversy at the time among purist critics has eventually become a symbolic song both of the band and of those golden years.
The word Irakere means both vegetation and whip in the African Yoruba language. Although founded in 1972, the band had antecedents on previous ensembles: Chucho Valdes’ combo (1965) and the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna (Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music, 1967), of which many of the founders of Irakere were part. By 1973, the band’s members were Chucho on the piano, Oscar Valdés on percussion, Carlos del Puerto on the bass, guitarist Carlos Emilio Morales, saxophonists Paquito D’Rivera and Carlos Averhoff, Jorge Varona on the trumpet, drummer Bernardo García and Alfonso Campos on the congas. The next year, Arturo Sandoval joined in and Enrique Plá took over the drums. According to Chucho Valdés, the D’Rivera-Averhoff-Sandoval-Varona horn section is the best ever in the history of Cuban music. Many other first class musicians were to join Irakere later on; among them, José Luis Cortés, Germán Velazco, César López, Orlando Maraca Valle and Miguel Angá.
Once Chucho asserted that he would never give up Irakere. Let’s keep hoping then that its veterans will reunite sooner than later to, along with today’s debuting talents, initiate a new era of Cuban popular music. -SIGFREDO ARIEL
