Columbia Records Newspaper Advertisement
CUTLINE INFORMATION: A Columbia Records newspaper advertisement that ran in African-American newspapers in 1928 (shown to the left) features a leading “sidewalk saint” from the 1920s & ’30s, The Rev. “Blind” Willie Johnson. A fixture on the street corners of towns throughout East and Central Texas, Johnson recorded over 30 songs but received little re-numeration. As late as the 1960s citizens in various towns remembered his impassioned performances of original and traditional gospel tunes. (Note the trademark “donations cup” at the end of Johnson’s guitar).
