Music Documentaries

Mariza and the Story of Fado
Fado (which translates to "fate") has been called the "Blues of Portugal;" it is a distillation of the nation's soul into music, where saudade (regret) and stoicism coexist with passion. This colorful film introduces us to Mariza, the queen of the Fado revival. Her powerful voice and dramatic delivery have brought her fame, but it is her deep love of the genre that the film explores, as we travel the streets, clubs and concert halls of Lisbon.

Guča
"Forget Glastonbury, Reading, Burning Man and Cochella" writes ThisIsTheLife.com: "the wildest music festival on earth is a cacophonic and crazy brass band festival that takes place every summer in the tiny Serbian town of Guča in the western region of Dragačevo." "Guča" the documentary takes us to that crazy brass festival, to meet the musicians, the coaches, the judges and the audience of this event that draws hundreds of thousands of people to a village of 2,000 every year.

The Highland Sessions
A special edit of the six-part series created by Pelicula Films for BBC 4 celebrating the musical links between Irish and Scottish music. We chose our favorites and put it all into a one-hour program with songs by such well-known artists as Mary Black, Karan Casey, Iarla O'Lionaird, and Karen Matheson. The singing is stellar, the playing is inspired, and the songs are unforgettable.

Youssou N'dour & Grand Orchestre du Caire at the Africa Live! Roll Back Malaria concert
In 2005 a huge 2-day concert was held in Senegal to raise money for the fight against Malaria. One of the organizers was Youssou N’Dour who had recently released a groundbreaking CD called “Egypt”, which brought African and Egyptian musicians together to create a testament to Senegalese Sufism. His inspired and heartfelt performance with the troupe at the festival was captured by producer Martin Meissonier, and was one of its truly shining moments.

Like Air to Breathe
A loving look at the way traditional music plays a part in contemporary Georgian society. For some it is a springboard to innovation, for some it is a link to a grounding past, for some it is a release from the anxieties of life, and for others it is simply a part of life, one they cannot imagine doing without. The focus is on four groups—a male choir, a female choir, a dance troupe and a folk fusion band. The extraordinary light and landscape of Georgia creates an impressive backdrop to it all.

Dame la Mano
On Sunday nights, Union City's La Esquina Habanera restaurant is the place to be for New Jersey's Cuban community. Here, professional and amateur dancers gyrate to the sensual and spirited rhythms of the rumba, a veteran dance practitioner’s credit for everything from curing cancer to sexual vigor in old age. Award-winning Dutch documentarian Heddy Honigmann listens to the stories of several Cuban exiles in this joyous cinematic celebration of Latin life, music and dance that culminates with an exuberant nightclub finale.

Amadou and Mariam live at La Goutte D'Or
On a stormy night in Paris' multicultural neighborhood of La Goutte D'Or, Mali's blind couple of song, Amadou and Mariam rocked the heavens. They gave the crowd a taste of home-made Mali blues, fresh from their smash CD "Dimanche a Bamako" and the audience gave them a night of love and appreciation. Get down with Amadou and Mariam, as they play in one of Paris' most vibrant neighborhoods, "Live at la Goutte d'Or."

Jupiter’s Dance
This documentary takes viewers on an exhilarating jaunt through the ghettos of Kinshasa to meet musicians who struggle to emerge from the chaos: rappers, handicapped bluesmen, griots, street children, inventors of instruments, and ndombolo musicians. Jupiter, the charismatic leader of the band Okwess International, serves as guide and narrator as he describes his city and his long battle to break out of the ghetto with his music. “The DRC has 450 ethnic groups and thousands of untapped musical resources. We’re sleeping on a mattress stuffed with dollars, yet we’re starving!”

Young Rebels
In Havana, Cuba, the spirited beats and rhymes of the hip-hop community are just as much a product of the troubled economy as of their insatiable revolutionary spirit. Young Rebels intimately engages five hip-hop groups and two producers as they negotiate the Havana summer. Directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the team behind the recent hit movie, Half Nelson.

Sufi Soul: The Mystic Music of Islam
There is an enduring legacy of sacred music within Islam, and historian and author William Dalrymple wants the world to see it. Traveling through Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, India and Morocco, he traces the history and current state of Sufi music, from ecstatic traditional masters like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, to the rock and club manifestations of Junoon and Mercan Dede. See and hear the mystic music of Islam—sufi soul.

Karoo Kitar
In the remote expanses of South Africa’s arid Karoo territory, a fascinating hybrid music is struggling for survival. It’s a mixture of Afrikaans popular music and local ingenuity. Yet there’s a compelling outpouring of raw emotion that’s channeled through these sentimental ballads and dances, and what emerges is a portrait of a true backwater—where the land is arid and unforgiving, and where the need to make music survives like a cactus. Follow singer-songwriter David Kramer as he puts together a dream team of players for a concert in the big city.

Saz
Saz is a rapper and an Israeli Arab. His life is growing more and more contradictory every day. Between his parent's resigned "realism" and his own anger, Saz is inspired to perfect his craft and take it to the world.
