After 3 years, Cesaria Evora is offering us “NHA SENTIMENTO” (My Feelings) on October 26th. 

14 exclusive tracks between coladeras and mornas to make us dream and dance to the Cape-Verdean rhythms – the coladeras are mostly written by her fetish authors Manuel de Novas and Teofilo Chantre, and 3 mornas: “Vento de Sueste” composed by Manuel de Novas, “Sentimento” by Tututa and “Mam’Bia E So Mi” composed by Vitorino Chantre and written by Teofilo Chantre. 

Recorded in spring 2009 between Mindelo, on São Vicente Island, and Paris, France, this album is produced by Jose da Silva for the label Lusafrica and arranged by Nando Andrade, Cesaria’s piano player and conductor. In “Nha Sentimento”, a record more up tempo than the previous ones, Nando focused on getting back to the typical way of playing percussion in Mindelo back in the 1950s and 1960s, way before Cape-Verdean music crossed borders and started being influenced by other trends. Nando has worked on this approach along with Tey Santos who already was by Cesaria’s side in Europe in 1991 when recording “Mar Azul”. For the mornas, Jose da Silva has emphasized the Arabic influence claimed by certain writers such as Manuel de Novas or Vasco Martins asking Farthy Salama to take care of the string arrangements and record them in Egypt with the Cairo Orchestra he conducts. This oriental languor gives the Diva’s voice a wistful colour.

Cesaria came back onstage in the spring and performed at several major summer festivals in Europe. Back in 2008, a stroke suffered during her Australian tour had obligated Cesaria to rest. Her health is now fine – she lost weight (which actually pleases her) and needs to follow a strict diet despite the fact she still smokes, even onstage when she gets the chance.

Nevertheless, to take it easy, Cesaria has decided along with Jose da Silva to reduce her concerts schedule to occasional and special events. Hence, she will perform a series of shows in Eastern Europe and Israel in the fall and will be in Paris for two concerts at the Grand Rex on November 9th and 10th.
