Coalition Background

The North American World Music Coalition unites and formalizes several ad hoc groups working to strengthen the viability of world music in North America. There have been several historical threads that have led up to where we are today. Canadian presenters have led the way with their collaborative approach. The Folk Alliance has always welcomed involvement of the world music community and offered a home to networking efforts. With a broader mission focused on folk music, attendees of their annual event sometimes find it hard to justify the expense of traveling to the conference, compared with the world-music-focused activity (from networking to dealmaking) that occurs at APAP and WOMEX. This year an effort is being made to formalize an infrastructure to build on past activities and bridge the diverse networks. The Coalition seeks to use the conferences of APAP, Folk Alliance, WOMEX, and related organizations to network and plan Coalition initiatives; create a world music event (stand-alone or piggyback with existing events); increase visibility within the music industry and general public; and advocate for friendlier VISA policies for international musicians touring North America.
