EVA AYLLON, Eva! Leyenda Peruana (Times Square):
The ambitious Ayllon’s issued a sizeable catalogue in her native Peru, but stateside she’s mainly known (if at all) only in relation to Susana Baca, the artist to whom she’s most frequently compared – not because of any vocal similarities, but because they both cull material from the Afro-Peruvian song canon. Nicknamed “the Queen of Lando” (after a local, suggestive song form), Ayllon’s rough but rich alto is more overtly sexy than Baca’s; where Baca exhibits elegance and fluid grace, Ayllon impresses with earthy zest and sizzle on a percussive mix of lando, val (Peruvian waltz), festijo, bolero and tondero. At UCLS’s Royce Hall in West LA on Sunday. www.uclalive.org 10/07/04
