The Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra supports antiwar sentiment, prison reform, environmentally sound transportation alternatives and even-population food distribution, and so much fractured activism can lead to platitudes that skimp on content. Watered-down leftists? Perhaps, but once onstage, it's easy to understand why this lighter-shade-of-pale 15 man band's channeling of Nigerian stalwart Fela Kuti is tolerated. Layering call and response vocals, screeching horns, Tony Allenworthy grooves and pounding percussion into a hip-shaking, soul-lifting performance, Antibalas strikes a balance between disillusionment and spirituality. The consistency lies in the group members' willingness to merge as one unit, setting aside solo accolades for a frenetic, epic energy. Caustic college students will be pleased to discover that protest can actually be fun. At tonight's show local electrophiles Sola warm the evening with their organic rhythms.
