Various ArtistsThe Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias From Peru (Barbes)
Sixties rock, culminating in psychedelia, had many colorful offshoots beyond the United States and the United Kingdom. The Roots of Chicha documents what happened in Peru when distorted guitars and Farfisa organs mingled with Colombian and Cuban Rhythms. The resulting genre, chicha, was an organic hybrid sparked by the migration of rural people into Peru's big cities. Soulful percussion-powered Lating beats, haunting wah-wah pedals made for an unpretentiously fun, unpremeditated musical fusion in the dance halls of Lima. This collection makes rare Peruvian recordings from those years available on CD.
