LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO
Raise Your Spirit Higher (Heads Up)
Ladysmith Black Mambazo celebrates the 10th anniversary of the end of apartheid with a politically charged collection of Zulu-Christian gospel. The 10-member vocal group goes beyond its usual style to include rap and a variation on Skip James' blues classic, "I'm So Glad." Recorded in the wake of the unsolved murder of group leader Joseph Shabalala's wife, the music is more a tribute to his love for her than a forum for his anger. The English-sung "Music Knows No Boundaries" sums up the group's positive approach to social and spiritual change. (Bill White) 01/27/04 >> go there
