Stella Chiwese Double Check : Two Sides of Zimbabwe's Mbira Queen Piranha Musik
According to the African Music Encyclopedia, Stella Chiwese is an ambassador - one of the few women playing the male-domi nated, mbira-based music of the Shona people. A dancer and musician, Chiwese took up the beautiful flowing sound of the thumb piano when mbira ses sions were banned in pre-inde- pehdence Zimbabwe, overcom ing two handicaps. This is double-sided CD. The first in cludes nine trance tracks heavy on drumming and spiritual sounds, and the second, titled Classical Hits, contains 12 re- releases of guitar and marimba tunes that made her famous in international music festivals.
Maurice El Medioni meets Roberto Rodrlguez , Descarga Oriental: The New York Sessions Piranha/Fusion III Once upon a time in Algeria, pi anist Maurice El Medioni, fused Arab music influences with Sephardic, Cuban, Western jazz, pop and his own unique key board technique. On this album. El Medioni, considered a master of Algerian rai, jams with Cuban percussionist Roberto Rodriguez. So you have an Al gerian Jew, via Paris and Mar seille, and a Latin drummer, via Havana and Miami Beach, meet ing in Manhattan's East Village. Great music. An unpretentious album that has the cosmopoli tan feel of a jam session, bridging French cabaret and Cuban rhythms with Andalusian Spain. 06/08/06
