Village Voice, Concert Pick >>
Mechanized Oompa Loompa horns that evoke jazzy New Orleans bars, French Manouche cabarets, and Delta bluesy barefeet Sunday-morning walks, all hot-peppered with whiskey-damaged Leon Redbone-like vocals and random-crazy-cool world music curveballs. Zingers like Russian and Romanian vamps, calypso, and Tuvan throat-singing influences. Unlike most (failed) attempts at blending world music with Western styles, Hazmat's awesome debut, Bahamut, doesn't sound patchwork, forced, or hokey. With Las Rubias del Norte and Slavic Soul Party. 09/22/06
