SambaDa 'Gente' (SambaDa Records)
The latest from the California based 10 person agGregation, SambaDa, showcases and electrifying and joyous clash of cultures and musical genres.
Founded by Brazilian expatriote and capoeira (Brazilian martial arts dance form) master, Papiba Godinho, the Santa Cruz-based group offers a fresh, kicking sound that's best described as "Afro-samba funk dance music." It features two lead vocalists, including Godinho; a quartet of percussionists who tap into "bloco-Afro" (Brazilian black pride percussion styles); guitarist/co-leader Will Kahn; a klezmer-influenced saxophonist/flutist; and a bassist, with half the members chipping in vocal chants.
With all 10 firing up the music and rhythms, the group presents Cali surfer-skater culture happily dancing with Brazilian samba and street beats. Throughout its zig-zag musical moves, SambaDa throws in elements of reggae, ska, Afro-beat, funk, punk and salsa to create and infectious, groove-happy music.
