Polaris Prize Nominees Besnard Lakes and Shad Collaborate for National Parks Project
Posted on Sep 19th 2010 9:00AM by Jenny Charlesworth
It's a good thing Besnard Lakes' Olga Goreas and Jace Lasek are big campers, otherwise the couple's recent trek to the Northwest Territories to collaborate with Shad as part of the National Parks Project might have been a bit of a chore.
"I think those people who aren't campers would probably say, 'Ah, not for me,'" Goreas tells Spinner. "We love camping though. We just came back from our annual camping trip at our special place we like to call our own."
It seems that the Montreal rockers are the perfect candidates to head off into the woods for a week-long residency in Nahanni National Park, which Parks Canada coordinated in honour of their upcoming centennial in 2011.
"Basically it's going to be canoeing by day and sounds by night," the singer-bassist says of participating in the series, which brings together more than 50 of Canada's top musicians and filmmakers, including Cadence Weapon, Woodpigeon and Apostle of Hustle, to work on the collaborative project drawing from the realms of film, television, music and new media.
As for working with Toronto rap sensation Shad, who Besnard Lakes co-founders hadn't met before, Goreas says that things "unfold as they do."
"There's no particular way [of] going about it," she says. "The only template that we have set for ourselves is to come up with something atmospheric and have the landscape be our narrative that unfolds."
Fans may have to wait until next year before they get a taste of what the Polaris Prize Short List co-nominees come up with around the campfire, but you can trust that the short film and soundtrack, which each team involved in the special project is required to make, will be pretty spectacular given the gorgeous setting.
"I love being in the wilderness," says Goreas. "You just lose track of all sense of time and place." 09/19/10 >> go there
