Coeur De Pirate is Béatrice Martin from Montréal, Canada, a young woman who plays piano since the tender age of three. After five years of conservatoire, she felt the urge to write her own songs to express her feelings, emotions and experiences, and she was recruited by the band Bonjour Brumaire as keyboard player. However, in spring 2008, she decided to concentrate on her solo project, Coeur De Pirate, inspired by the music she grew up to (French and folk music). With only four shows in her tour book and support from MySpace, she signed with Grosse Boîte (Dare To Care) and spent the summer recording her debut album in cooperation with David Brunet (Tricot Machine, Daniel Boucher, etc). She was also playing festivals such as Les Francofolies de Montreal and Osheaga.
Her self-titled debut album has been praised by critics (including superstar blogger Perez Hilton). More than 50,000 copies later, the adventure continues as Coeur De Pirate is now on her way to take Europe by storm. The Cologne based record label Le Pop Musik licensed her debut album for the markets in Germany and Austria.
She has won a Felix for “Revelation de l’année” at ADISQ 2009, been nominated for a Juno and long-listed for the Polaris Prize in 2009 and won a Victoire in France in the category “Song of the year” in March 2010.
