If it’s March, don’t expect to find the Irish band Dervish performing anywhere in Ireland. Don’t even expect to find the band’s members anywhere in the Emerald Isle.

The veteran traditional band has its own tradition.

The Ireland-based sextet returns to America every March to perform concerts in connection with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. On March 14, they will visit the area for a special performance at Longwood Gardens in East Marlborough.

Dervish was formed in 1989 in a small Irish city called Sligo and has become one of Ireland’s most internationallyacclaimed traditional music bands. The current Dervish lineup features founder Liam Kelly (flutes, whistles) along with Cathy Jordan (vocals, bodhran, bones), Tom Morrow (fiddle), Shane Mitchell (accordion) and Michael Holmes (guitar). “For the last 15 years, we’ve come to the states to perform for St. Patrick’s month.” said Jordan, during a phone interview from her home in County Sligo. “It’s a time when huge amounts of people want to be Irish.”Fans know what to expect from a Dervish concert but there will be something different this time around -- a new Dervish album. The new disc “The Thrush in the Storm” will be the band’s first album release since “Travelling Show”, which came out in 2007.“We’ll be picking it up tomorrow when we arrive in the U.S.” said Jordan, during the phone interview a few weeks ago. “I’m looking forward to hearing it because it’s just being mastered.

“We recorded it at the end of November. It took three days only -- probably because we had our homework done. We had done a lot of pre-production work. And, we had already played most of the songs live.

“Of all the albums we’ve made, it was the best process. We’re lucky enough to have this manor house we used. We set everything up and had great equipment. We’d do three takes of each song and stop. We listen to the takes later and, if needed, come back and do it again.”
