Drawing from the gorgeous details of Turkish Sufi rituals -- the soothing ney (reed pipe) and infamous, Rumi-inspired Dance of the Whirling Dervish -- Mercan Dede creates the sacred in new contexts. Taking instruments such as the darbouka, santur, and trumpet (as well as his beloved ney), looping them live, and feeding them back through layers of digital editing and sonic feedback, his 21st-century Arabic folk is a technological mythology unto itself. Touring in support of his latest release, Su (Escondida), Dede's show, which features female dervish Mira Burke, is a beautiful testament to artists reinventing their cultural traditions with an instinctual flair for modernism.
