They Were the World

With all the political ugliness in Zimbabwe these days, Shona Mbira Music is a wonderful reminder of the country's musical beauty. It's also a reminder that Nonesuch's Explorer Series spanned the globe long before world music became trendy. The 1977 Shona and the 1969 High-Life and Other Popular Music from Ghana are two of the 13 African titles that are launching a reissue program of the entire series -- 92 CDs in all, each listing at only $12. Look for Indonesia and the South Pacific in January. Over the next three years, Nonesuch will re-explore Tibet and Kashmir, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, and India.
