BALI MUSIC FROM THE MORNING OF THE WORLD
(Nonesuch)

From the years 1967-1984, Nonesuch sent its producers into the feild to document indigenous sounds and compositions throughout the world.  What they captured was titled the Nonesuch Explorer series and still remains the most comprehensive document of world music one label has ever assembled.  At its essence, the Explorer series epitomizes recording as a traveling experience for the listener.  With "Bali" Nonesuch takes us on vacation to the South Pacific and Indonesia for its second wave of Explorer reissues, a region of great musical complexity and talent.  This collection (originally released in 1967) was the first to bear the Explorer series moniker and was also one of the first records to expose the West to shimmering majesty of gamelon music.  Gamelon is an orchestral island style and also a set of instruments associated with it (including metallophones, gongs, cymbals, drums and flutes), which represents only one of six distinct styles showcased on "...Morning of the World" which, like Bali's geography, is caught between the melodies of the east and native tribal rhythms, but remains untouched by Western influence - at least in 1967.  An incomparable musical record.  TODD ROSENBERG 03/01/03
