Lode, Deep South rocks far North >>

Northerners would agree that there's nothing better than some southern lovin', but for most MTU students the warm sun of the South always manages to run beyond the means of our pocketbooks. Luckily, in light of our own restitution, the James Martin Black endowment has arranged with the help of the MTU Great Events series office, to bring the love of the south right here to the Copper Country, and no I don't mean warm weather.

On Saturday, April 2, the Rozsa will be hosting from Eunice, La., the sweet southern sound of Geno Delafose and the French Rockin' Boogie. This Creole zydeco band brings an eccentric mix of R&B, country and blues which has landed them the unofficial title of America's most popular Cajun group. At the 2003 Big Easy Awards of New Orleans they were also recognized as the Zydeco Group of the Year. The group has released four albums and leader Delafose is known as one of the most versatile musicians in southern Louisiana. The energy quality of performances are reputably amazing and are rumored to keep listeners jumpin' for hours; just what the doctor ordered as far as frost bitten Tech students are concerned.

Delafose, a Creole southern cowboy from deep in the south of Louisiana, was born into a family rich with zydeco music tradition. He began playing and performing as early as age seven with the influence of his father, a zydeco musician. He then began playing along side his father in a group called The Eunice Playboys. Geno grew to lead his father's group before taking on his own, French Rockin Boogie. Being a true southern cowboy at heart, Delafose puts forth in his music his rooted heritage and the same hard work, dedication and discipline he learned in growing up on a farm. He now alternates his love for music and being a cowboy by working on his own Double D Ranch, recording albums and playing 150 shows a year.

Tickets for the show are on sale now for both the 2 p.m. matinee and the 7:30 p.m. performance. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at the Rosza center box office, or on-line at tickets.mtu.edu. Get them while they last.

The exotic, foot stompin', soul raisin' sound of Geno Delafose and the French Rockin' Boogie aren't exactly your good ole' everyday Copper Country listening. For us northern dwellers a taste of the South should be no less than an exclusive treat here in the Keweenaw; if nothing else, a rare chance to raise our blood temperature while enjoying the all-too-seldom cultural experience.
