Here's a great way to become hip to the seductive vibe of world music. Hailing from the global hub of Paris, where DJs filter the latest pop sounds from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean through an electronic sieve, The Vive La World Festival brings together new sounds with older traditional forms of music. Performers include the sultry Natacha Atlas, a Belgian-born belly-dancing singer who has collaborated with Sinead O'Connor, Jah Wobble, Talvin Singh, Banco de Gaia and the Indigo Girls; Electro Bamako, a collaboration between French pop musician Marc Minelli and Malian singer Mamani Keita; DuOud, which gives the lute-like oud a contemporary treatment with breakbeats, jazz grooves and metal guitar; and the sweet melodies and catchy rhythms of African musician So Kalmery.
