 In the desert of Mali, the traditions of North Africa and the sub Saharan Africa meet.  This disk documents a January 2003 three-day festival near the storied and remote city of Timbuktu, featuring artists from Mali’s many ethnic groups, as well as performers from neighboring Mauritania and Niger.  Imagine a Woodstock in the most inaccessible place possible.  There are plenty of hypnotic skipping rhythms, clapped, drummed, sung, and played on traditional harps.  Robert Plant, of Led Zeppelin, was there too.  And his brooding, loping song fits right in on the mix.  World Music star Oumou Sangare and Ali Farke Toure also put in appearances.  Sounds like one of the coolest music festivals ever.
