Dalglish, Larsen & Sutherland Metamora Sugar Hill
The second release by this trio based in Bloomington, Ind. Blends multi-instrumental melodies, warm vocal harmonies and traditional Celtic dance rhythms in an often reflective, always optimistic musical tour-de-force. Each member – Malcolm Dalglish, Pete Sutherland and Grey Larsen – is a virtuoso and polished soloist and extremely supportive to each other’s playing. Sharing lead vocals and alternating composing credits, each gets a chance to shine. Dalglish’s “Little Potato,” is a classic novelty tune. Sutherland’s “Fiddler’s Hymn” features powerful, unaccompanied three-part vocal harmonies, but the album’s strength rests in the delicate, but expressive instrumental interplay between Dalglish on hammer dulicmer and percussion: Sutherland on fiddle, guitar and piano: and Larsen on flutes, whistles, concertina, guitar and piano.
