Mylene Mylene Fast Horse
The yearning melancholy, the lilting melodies of Brazilian popular music from the '60s is audible in her DNA. But Mylene brings those enduring sounds into the 21st century on her self-titled CD, mingling them with echoes of reggae, the Near East, electronica and trip hop. Her spirit of reinvention will be most apparent to most listeners on her version of "Eleanor Rigby," transformed into sad, chill-room Bahaian ballad. The only distraction from her music's flow are the sampled conversations and found sounds wedged between many tracks like unwanted doorstops. - Dave Luhrssen 11/06/03
