Mylene makes sleek urban music with a Brazilian backbone. The songs move with two paces at the same time -- one, deep, easy and tick-tocking back and forth, the other, scattered on top, chopped up and subdivided, with perky accents and crisp percussion. Percussion wiz Ramiro Musotto produced. There's drumming a-plenty, but the singing wins the day. Portuguese has got to be one of the most musical languages, with its peculiar, sweet sadness and crunchy fricatives. Reggae, hip-hop, samba, bossa nova and Brazilian pop are all swirled together here. Draw a line between Astrud Gilberto and Portishead on your music map and find the midpoint.
