Following her first ethno-pop album “Gigi”, the singer from Ethiopia and Bill Laswell here focus on a more organic style of music. The production is no longer in the limelight, happy to play supporting role to the heart of the matter. Which, without being old-fashioned, goes back to the tradition of spiritual songs from Haile Selassie’s homeland. The foundation to this record is the golden age of Ethiopian music, brought tactfully into the present day. The arrangements of the tracks sung in Amharic, taken from the ancient Abyssinian repertory or composed by Gigi, first highlight both the singer’s sensuality and acoustic resonance before building a pertinent and convincing contemporary architecture around these essential qualities, with the help of the talented Karsh Kale, Abejagu Shiota and Tony Cedras. 12/01/03
