Abyssinia Infinite Featuring Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw - Zion Roots [Editor's Pick]

This album features the talent of Ejigayehu “Gigi” Shibabaw who adds beautiful vocals throughout the tracks. “Zion Roots” marks a return to traditional Ethiopian music after nearly two decades of stifling rule in the Derg regime. Fusing elements of experimental ambient, jazz, soul, gospel, and Afro-beat. Utilizing traditional instruments like the kirar (one of the oldest surviving East African instruments and King David’s harp from the Bible) and the washint (a bamboo flute), the lyrics are sung in half Amharic and half in an old language known as Agewna, which is hardly spoken save for Gigi’s father tribe. The rhythms are electric while the melodies and harmonies just flow overtop of everything else. It’s daunting how beautiful their creation is—I’d highly recommend this for anyone wanting to expand their music taste.
