Ethiopian vocalist Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibaw has a piercing voice and is quite charismatic and striking on this 10-song set that features her latest collaboration with producer/guitarist Bill Laswell. While Shibaw sings traditional devotional and contemporary romantic songs with verve and authority, the Zion Roots ensemble adds sweltering, sizzling backgrounds behind and underneath her. Shibaw can sound lilting, sensual or defiant, and Laswell's production brings a 21st century sonic quality to arrangements that smartly combine vintage instrumentation and modern approaches.
