Zion Roots is not a reggae recording, but represents one of the roots of Jamaican culture.  Abyssinia Infinite is a Bill Laswell-produced project featuring Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu Shibabaw, a mellifluous woman who transposes the modes of Ethiopian Orthodox liturgical music into Afro-pop songs that hover somewhere between today and tradition.  The melodies hint of the Near East while the rhythms are African, plucked out on harps and a variety of string instruments and delivered by quietly insistent drumming.   12/18/04
