Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Raise Your Spirit Higher [Editor's Pick]

For thirty years now Ladysmith Black Mambazo has combined South African traditional music with Christian gospel. Formed by Joseph Shabalala in the early ‘60s, he was a farmboy turned factory worker, they took their name Ladysmith from his home town, Black referring to oxen the strongest of farm animals, and Mambazo the Zulu word for axe which was to show the groups ability to chop down any singing rival who challenged them. Avoiding invoking only Christian themes, “Raise Your Spirit Higher” is a spiritual burst of Afro harmonies and rhythms and leans on a type of traditional music called Isicathamiya, which was originally developed in the mines of South Africa. Paul Simon came to South Africa in the mid ‘80’s and incorporated the sound of Ladysmith into his album “Graceland”; he later produced their Grammy awardwinning album “Shaka Zulu” in ’87. Six more Grammy nominations under their belt finds Ladysmith Black Mambazo looking to the future which is decidedly bright for these vocal folk heroes. The music is very positive and just oozes a great vibe regardless of your religious beliefs.
