Ladysmith Black Mombaza are the most well known exponents of Iscathamiya, a singing style originating in the mine and factory worker¹s camps of Aparthied era South Africa. These were inhabited by men who had come to the city for work, and who were far from their families. They invented a special kind of a capella singing to pass the time; one that would also not disturb or alarm their white employers. Iscathamiya literally means 'gentle steps.' 'Wenyukela' is a song that very much reflects the spirit of Black Mombaza's founder, Joseph Shabalala, whose faith has seen him through tragedy and adversity. It means 'Raise Your Spirit Higher' and as he has said "When you get low, Spirit be higher than those things trying to oppress you."
