Ladysmith Black Mambazo might not be able to pull off singing the phone book, but don't put it past them. "Raise Your Spirit Higher" (Heads Up International Recordings), the South African a cappella gospel group's new album, includes a song called "Fak Ibhande (Don't Drink and Drive)" -- and darned if it isn't the most compelling, grooving public service you've ever heard. Eighteen years after Western audiences discovered the group on Paul Simon's "Graceland," Ladysmith is still conjuring up spiritual vocal magic in the face of overwhelming personal tragedy (leader Joseph Shabalala's wife was murdered in 2002 by a still-unknown assailant). The group opens a two-night stand at Durham's Carolina Theatre on Tuesday. (See story, page 35.) 02/27/04 >> go there
