LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO The deliriously rich and magical harmonies of South Africa’s Ladysmith first captured the wider world’s imagination on Paul Simon’s Graceland. And the infatuation has never waned, through appearances on Sesame Street, The Lion King soundtrack, collaborations with unlikely partners like Dolly Parton, and even TV ads, made much cooler than they deserve to be. Ladysmith’s a cappella sound is a wonder of nature, 10 voices simultaneously exuding gentleness and strength, combining Zulu traditional music with leader Joseph Shabalala’s gospel inclinations. Joyful spirit still pervades Ladysmith’s new Raise Your Spirit Higher (Heads Up International), and perhaps miraculously, considering Shabalala’s wife was murdered during the recording of the album two years ago. When they lapse into singing “don’t drink and drive” in English, however, it’s lyrically nothing but another commercial. $28-$38. 7:30 p.m. Ted Mann Concert Hall, 2128 Fourth St. S., University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; 612.624.2345. 02/11/04
