I typically don't like the gospel genre, or music that sticks to a repetitive chord or chant. Both qualities define Raise Your Spirit Higher (Wenyukela), but this ensemble’s vocal prowess is undeniable. Each member adds his own unique vocal personality, and the result is harmonies that are quite beautiful. The SACD format showcases an excellent 5.1-channel recording that captures these subtle intonations and creates an immense soundstage with good weight and excellent definition. Compared to the currently available two-channel CD, the SACD’s placements of background vocals and vocal flourishes in the rear channels make for a very impressive presentation. Still, despite these high production values, I had a hard time staying interested. I know these songs are intended to instill spiritual introspection, but after a while I found my attention displaced by the monotonous rhythms and repetitive nature of the music....Anthony Di Marco
