Toledo Blade, CD Review >>
RAISE YOUR SPIRIT HIGHER Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Heads Up International) This 10-man vocal group soared to fame on the coattails of Paul Simon on his 1986 "Graceland" album, which featured the rhythms and melodies of South Africa. Its new CD has a solid, persistent message of spirituality, but the unique sound holds up well even with just the music created by the tenor/baritone/bass voices, considering that most fans don't understand the lyrics. The voices, in fact, are all the men need to make the intricate rhythms entertaining. While not offering any musical surprises, the results here seem fresh and welcome. The album is due in stores this month.
