Raise Your Spirit Higher (Wenyukela) Heads Up
**** It’s been a rough stretch for LBM’s leader Joseph Shablala. Two years ago, his wife was gunned down at his side. His son by another wife was accused of having hired the hit man. Shabalala was criticized for performing at Queen’s Jubilee when he should have been in mourning. Yet he and his crew still raise spirits higher with impeccable songs and harmonies. They are every bit as sweet today as they were on Paul Simon’s Graceland album in 1986. It’s been 35 years since the first LBM recording, but South Africa’s celebrated mbube group remains the finest Zulu a cappella ensemble ever. Raise Your Spirit Higher is further affirmation of LBM’s well-deserved status. 02/12/04
