[Excerpt]

I also stopped by Monmouth U.’s Pollak Theatre to checkout Ladysmith Black Mambazo.  Most of us will recall South Africa’s premiere singing group from their efforts on Paul Simon’s Graceland album released in 1986.  The nine man a cappella group (one member had to return home) is on tour in support of their new release entitled “Raise Your Spirit Higher: Wenyukela.”

And that’s exactly what Ladysmith Black Mambazo did.  Filling the cozy auditorium with sweet, sweet harmonies and feelings of goodwill the world renowned singing group performed a number of songs from their latest including the title cut, “Wenyukela (Raise Your Spirit Higher)” “Because I Love” and “Selingelethu Sonke.” Other crowd favorites were “Hello My Baby “ and “Homeless.”

Hey.  This was a night of pure joy and excitement as Ladysmith Black Mambazo sang, danced and joked their way through songs about their roots and homeland.  Surrounded by a backdrop that encapsulated some of the people, slogans and events that represent their country’s history and struggles for freedom, Ladysmith Black Mambazo raised the spirits and enriched the lives of all those present.  Their efforts were rewarded with a much deserved standing ovation.  FYI, Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a must see.
