Athens News (Ohio), Grammy-winning group comes to HC >>

Ladysmith Black Mambazo sang at a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, for the Pope in Rome and at South African presidential inaugurations.  This Saturday, this group, which represents the traditional culture of South Africa in the eyes of many music fans worldwide, will perform on Hocking College’s campus in Nelsonville.

Regarded as cultural emissaries at home and around the world, Ladysmith Black Mambazo is the new South African national treasure, according to a press release.  “Whether singing hymns or secular songs, they always raise their voice in glorious harmony,” the release said.

Founded by Joseph Shabalala in the mid 1950s and comprised largely of family members, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded more than 40 albums and sold more than six million records, including the Grammy award-winning “Shaka Zulu,” produced by Paul Simon.

The show starts at 8 p.m. in the Hocking College Student Center.  Tickets may be reserved by calling the Response Center at 1-877-HOCKING or 462-5464, extension 2112.
