When Spain was the colonial power in Peru, the African slaves weren't allowed to own drums, so wooden crates and donkey jaws became percussive musical instruments. Despite a long history, the African influence on Peruvian music has only recently begun to get any attention. The 30-year-old group Peru Negro, for instance, is only now making its U.S. debut, and it has released its first international record, "Sangre de un Don." In concert at Royce Hall, expect a percussive backbone to melodic guitar and vocals.

Peru Negro, Royce Hall, UCLA campus, Westwood, 8 p.m. $25 to $45. (310) 825-2101
