Exuberant Afro-Peruvian sounds from the indisputable masters of Peruvian folk – a troupe of dancers and musicians who’ve spent over 30 years rescuing African traditional from oblivion in the land of the Incas. This soulful music that’s marked by the earthy sound of Peruvian cajones (wooden boxes used as congas), the deep lament of string instruments and the soaring vocals of Monica Duenas, a singer who continues the tradition of larger-than-life Afro-Peruvian divas like Susan Baca and Eva Ayllon. The melodious flute solo on “Jolgorio de los Negritos” adds a touch of innovation to an aural recipe that remains very much alive. 01/14/04
