Peru Negro in Napa
The music of black Peru is distinct from Andean folk or Afro- Cuban styles. In Peru, when colonial masters banned drums, the country's slaves kept alive their outlawed rhythms by using anything that could be shaken or slapped with a hand: crates, wooden chairs, even donkey jawbones.
Over the centuries, the music that evolved from these humble origins became soulful and melodic. Today, Peru Negro's 20-member troupe performs with precise authenticity.
