Most Americans know Peruvian music as the sound from the Andes which includes pan flute and guitar. But the Peruvian ensemble "Peru Negro" focuses on Peruvian Music of African tradition.
The band's name translates as "Black Peru", and that's partly the genesis of the group's music. This year, the band celebrates its 35th anniversary with a new CD entitled "Jolgorio." Juan Morillo produced this CD. So, Juan Morillo, in 1969, the band's founder, Ronaldo Campos, who passed away a couple of years ago, was playing indigenous black Peruvian music in a restaurant in Lima. At the time, was this the kind of music most Peruvians were listening to?
