PERU NEGRO: "Jolgorio" (Times Square) - Three stars
When many think of Peruvian music, they hear the ethereal pan pipes and flutes used by Simon & Garfunkel in the 1970 hit "El Condor Pasa." But there's a far more exciting side to the country's music, and this long-running song-and-dance ensemble reflects such powerful currents as African percussion and Latin elements. The band, which contributed two tracks (including this record's "Son de Los Diablos") to David Byrne's terrific 1995 anthology, "The Soul of Black Peru," is thrilling here on such standouts as "Alcatraz." The group's two-dozen members perform Sunday at UCLA's Royce Hall.
