Led by Ronaldo "Rony" Campos, the legendary Afro-Peruvian song-and-dance troupe, Perú Negro appeared on February 8, 2004, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus, as part of a triumphant 12-city North American tour coinciding with the launch of its second internationally available disc (Jolgorio, Times Square, 2004). Consisting of ten dancers, five percussionists, three string players (two guitars and a bass) and a couple of lead singers, Perú Negro gained much applause from the audience by authentically interpreting various Afro-Peruvian forms (from the exuberant festejo to the sensual landó to the mournful panalivio) and properly combining melodic, Iberian-rooted strings with passionate vocals and a powerful percussive section comprised of Afro-Peruvian and/or Afro-Cuban instruments-cajón, cajita, quijada de burro, bongó and tumbadoras. A highlight of this memorable 90-minute show was the impressive adaptation of "Son de los diablos," a segment protagonized by masked "devils" wearing elaborate costumes, playing quijadas and cajitas, and challenging each other to joyous zapateo 04/01/04
