Dirty Linen, CD Review >>
The musical traditions of Peru's black communities have been introduced to the world stage through the performances of Peru Negro. With the release of its second full-length album, Jolgorio, the Lima-based ensemble continues to revive the spirit of their ancestors. Rather than the panpipe and charango sounds usually associated the Andes Mountain region Peru Negro combines African and flamenco influences in a polyrhythmic blend of guitar, bass, vocal chanting, and percussion instruments ranging from conga and bongos to fruit crates, church collection boxes, and a donkey jaw. 08/01/04
