Austin American-Statesman, Historical, traditional music of Peru >>

For the first time in Austin, the Afro-Peruvian song and dance ensemble Peru Negro will perform traditional Afro-Peruvian music that has been praised all over the world.

The late Ronaldo Campos de la Colina formed Peru Negro in 1969, along with 12 family members, with the mission to preserve Afro-Peruvian music. When colonial slave masters banned drum playing, African slaves preserved their rhythmic music by using whatever they could find, such as a wooden crate, a tithing box or a donkey jawbone. The slave history of Peru differs from American history in that slaves were brought from many different African regions, creating a diverse cultural landscape.

Now the most famous dance and music company in Peru, Peru Negro consists of more than 30 performers and runs its own school and junior troupe, Peru Negrito, based in Lima, Peru.

Peru Negro will perform courtesy of the Uni versity of Texas' ArtesAmericas, which presents Latin American and U.S. Latino performing artists to audiences across the country.
