Black Pride

Susana Baca may be the unequivocal priestess of Afro-Peruvian movement, but the group that rescued the black roots of Peru's music from oblivion in the '70s is Peru Negro.  Brimming with vitality and magic, the ensemble is much more than just a band, combining complex choreography and sensuous dancing with soaring vocal choruses and the crackling percussion of the cajon, the wooden box that's at the core of the most traditional Peruvian music.
