Peru Negro brings subversive rhythms to town

Slave masters in colonial Peru banned drums.  But the slaves wouldn't be deterred.  They preserved their outlawed rhythms using empty fruit crates, chairs, almost anything that made noise when slapped or struck by a bamboo stick.

Peru Negro will whirl into Duluth on Tuesday, dancing in a style once condemned by slavemasters as "immoral" and performing on an array of authentic instruments including the quijada de burro, a donkey jaw used as a shaker and scraper.

The Lima- based group takes stage at 7:30pm in Mitchell Auditorium at the College of St. Scholastica. Tickets cost $18 for adults, $14 for students and seniors and $10 for ages 12 and younger.
