Orlando Weekly, CD Review >>
Guitarist Koité embodies much of what's great about Malian music. His deft ability to segue from gentle beauty like the meditative "Sirata" into the subtle, groove-oriented pop of "Batoumambe" speaks to the easy diversity of the music from this West African country. Koité's light finger-picking style is more atmospheric than melodic and much of the forward motion on this excellent double-disc live set comes from his rhythm section, which, like most groups from Mali, is more focused on complementing the overall vibe of the music than on locking into a forceful, percussive attack. 01/08/04 >> go there
