Good Times (Santa Cruz, CA), Concert Review >>
By accessing the Rio Theatre stage via the aisles, Malian acoustic guitarist/vocalist Habib Koite and his band Bamada broke the proverbial fourth wall before playing a note. Koite splashed a tastefully subtle smidgen of rock star vibe across the theater, even punctuating his guitar leads with the occasional tongue-flick of lip pucker. Looking like world beat’s answer to Angus Young, percussionist Mahmmadou Kone rocked spastically to the high-energy beats he played. The end of the show say individual members of the band taking solos that revealed each to be a top-notch player. (When was the last time you heard a xylophone solo that rocked?) Bassist Abdoul Wahab Berthe, in particular, underwent a Clark-Kent-to-Superman transformation as he let loose a face-melting flurry of notes, prefacing a cheery conclusion to the evening’s festivities. 02/12/04
